HK International Airport’s New Runway to Commence This Year

Last year, Hong Kong’s International Airport saw an increase in cargos shipped by 12.5% in volume up to 5m tonnes, which surpasses the record of 4.8m tonnes in 2019.

With this, the airport authorities announced in public that the construction of the new runway to accommodate the increasing demand for both passenger and cargo capacities has finally reached a milestone.

The project, which is set to be completed by 2024, involves the construction of a third runway parallel to the existing north-south runway, as well as associated taxiways, aprons, and aircraft parking stands. It also includes the expansion of the Terminal 2 building.

The new runway is expected to increase the airport’s annual capacity from 68 to 102 million passengers and from 9 to 13 million tonnes of cargo.

Currently, the two existing runways are operating at full capacity during peak hours with around 1,100 take-offs and landings every day. The expansion will not only provide much-needed extra capacity but also enable the airport to better cope with adverse weather conditions.

Expansion Project Cost

The expansion project is estimated to cost around HK$141.5 billion (US$18.3 billion). Construction work on the third runway began in December 2016 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Once operational, the new runway will increase the airport’s annual capacity from 68 to 102 million passengers and from 9 to 13 million tonnes of cargo
