In The Driver’s Seat with Floship CEO Josh Tsui

January.11.2023

In the Driver’s Seat today is Josh Tsui, the CEO of Floship, a smart end-to-end global logistics company based out of Hong Kong. The Floship team have created an industry-leading logistics platform that facilitates the global fulfillment process for emerging eCommerce companies and brands. When Josh, a born and bred Canadian, isn’t solving the complexities of the logistics world over a plate of poutine, he spends the rest of his time traveling and taking his dog on adventures.

What is something you are working on right now?

When I became CEO at Floship a few months ago, I was impressed by what the company had achieved thus far. Floship has had this unrivalled flexibility and agile way of doing business which has allowed it to grow exponentially over its seven-year history.

Right now, I’m focused on how to leverage and build upon that success and those unique advantages. I’m currently occupied with breathing life into the company’s global growth and expansion plans for 2023. One of my long-term visions and objectives for the company is to really ensure that its growth and expansion are well-rooted in solid foundations and processes to ensure its longevity. My experience has taught me that embedding clear directions and processes throughout the organization and all that we do will enable us to go even further and will allow us to continue to be agile as we forge ahead disrupting the supply chain.

In recent months, we’ve been afforded some fantastic opportunities in terms of high-level partnerships, which are enabling us to scale rapidly over the coming months and have given us a unique competitive advantage when it comes to how we want to conduct our expansion plans.

What is something you cannot live without in your job?

First and foremost, it would have to be coffee. Coffee, for me — aside from being the life-giving nectar of the Gods, is an example of something that, no matter how much effort you put into it, the results will vary depending on how much you care about it. This is a mantra that I keep in mind whenever I approach my role, and I encourage my team to apply it to theirs as well.

The second and probably the more useful answer would be my phone. I recently upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 which has enabled me to become more efficient and productive when on the go. As I’m often on the move meeting everyone from investors to the media and everyone in between, I don’t get much time to sit behind my desk. With the Fold4, I can just whip it out whilst out and about and get a truckload of work done without having to carry around my laptop which makes my day-to-day much easier.

What is your dream vehicle?

Growing up, my dream car was the classic BMW Z4 – the two-seat convertible. However, as I’ve grown up, I’ve had to change my opinion because I’d never be able to get into the Z4 due to my height. Nowadays, my favourite car would have to be the Jaguar E Type. The classic design and elegance of that car are simply unparalleled in my opinion.

Aside from that, I’ve always been a huge Formula One fan, especially Toto Wolff and the Mercedes team. Toto has been a huge influence on my leadership style and is someone I’ve got a great deal of admiration for. One quote of his always sticks out in my mind; “I’m the team’s chief cheerleader” — the idea being that he’s the one who finds the right people, empowers them to be the best, and cheers them on is something that I try to emulate in my role as CEO.

What is something you are proud of?

There are two achievements that I’m quite proud of.

The first would be during my time as a Director, where I orchestrated organization-wide changes and revamped inefficient business processes into fledgling operationally efficient systems.

The second would have to be at my last post when I scaled the mall business threefold in less than a year and pushed the non-restaurant vertical to the top performing vertical of the entire business in 12 months. My department also had the highest culture score and the lowest turnover rate which is something that I’m extremely proud of.

Logistics professionals have a tough job – What are you guys doing to make their life easier?

The whole reason that Floship exists is to make the lives of logistics professionals and those of eCommerce owners much easier and more transparent. By using Floship, online store owners can turn their time, attention, and money to other aspects of their business that need their attention in order for them to win and grow. They can rest assured knowing that their entire supply chain ecosystem is in good hands thanks to Floship’s portal and expert account management team.

What do you think the Logistics industry will look like 10 years from now?

To this day, the logistics industry could be considered as being stagnant, old-fashioned with little transparency, and quite challenging to manage.

Ten years from now, I foresee that the supply chain industry will become much more unified, not as fragmented, and difficult to manage as it is today. Floship is already acting like a beacon, shining its light on the future of the supply chain industry and I believe that other industry players will begin to adopt a more cohesive and holistic approach to supply chain management over the coming decade.

As Floship is uniquely positioned, I believe that we’ll be able to continue pioneering and disrupting the supply chain and hopefully not succumb to some of the stumbling blocks that might hinder other companies from progressing as nimbly as we’re positioned to. Floship is currently the leader in cross-border logistics out of Asia, and I hope that under my guidance, it will become the leading logistics platform worldwide.
